Morning Star Gallery was founded in 1984 in a mid-19th century adobe house
on historic Canyon Road in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Our exhibition space
is classically New Mexican in style, featuring thick adobe walls, vigas,
and nichos for display. The beauty of this architectural space is a natural
setting to pay tribute to the splendor of Native American art.
This building was a key component to an important mission of the gallery:
to clearly focus on and exhibit Native American art as fine art and not
ethnography. Morning Star Gallery created an elegant and uncluttered space
where objects could be viewed and considered as individual masterpieces
of their tradition.
The founding principle of the gallery was to cohesively apply the tenets
of connoisseurship across the diversity of material available from Native
North America--bead and quillwork from the Plains; pottery, textiles,
jewelry and Katsinas from the Southwest; baskets from the Great Basin
and California; and wooden sculpture from the Northeast and Northwest
Coast.
The goal has always been to offer the very best objects available, regardless
of category and this has been reflected in the countless masterpieces
that have moved through our collections over the years. Our focus on authenticity,
quality, and variety of material has been the cornerstone of our reputation
and success for the last 25 years!
Our staff is able to advise collectors on all aspects of acquiring, installing,
conserving, appraising, improving quality and disposition of material.
As members of the Antique Tribal Art Dealers Association (ATADA), our
staff will uphold the highest standards of customer service. We sincerely
hope you find this website to be useful and that it may peak your interests
further in Native American art. We invite you to contact
us if we may be of any assistance.
In 2002, Nedra Matteucci Galleries acquired
Morning Star Gallery as a natural compliment to their fine art collections
of important American paintings and sculpture. We expanded our areas of
expertise and product line to include antique New Mexican furniture, devotional
art, and contemporary Native American art featured within the "Art
for the New Collector" Series. We are also pleased with the association
with our other sister gallery on Canyon Road, Nedra
Matteucci Fine Art, which represents important contemporary American
and European paintings and sculpture.
